Find a Good Shop

This is because the better quality shops will invest in having a good selection of only the best products. Be wary of a shop which only carries one or two products as they are clearly biased as to which products they deem are best. While this can be because they are familiar with the quality of the products, it can often be because they are getting some kind of incentive to sell the brands they are. Ask around to other cyclists to find a good shop in your town.
Talk to People
It is not always easy to get a feel for how good a product is by reading the literature which is put out by the company. Even publications which seem respectable will produce pieces which will encourage you to buy a product only to find out later the publication is sponsored by the company.
