Triathlon Packing Checklist

packingAre you a new triathlete or someone that has been around the track a few times? Whether you are brand new or have been doing this for a while, you should have an appreciation for how nice it is to have all of your gear packed up and ready to go when you are. Forgetting an essential item is a fear that all of us end up having, and so packing ahead of time and having a packing list for all of your essentials is a really good idea that you should put some thought into. Here is a basic packing list for essentials for your triathlon preparation, put together by some of the best triathletes in the biz. This includes all of the most basic items, some that are rather optional in nature and some tips and tricks that you’ll want to know as you go along.

Preparation for Swimming, Pack These Things

In preparation for the swimming leg of your triathlon competition, you are going to want to make sure that you have your tri suit, a wristwatch, a pair of goggles, a backup pair of goggles, a wet suit, your swim cap, a backup swim cap, a timing chip, and optional nose plugs and ear plugs.

Preparation for Bicycling, Pack These Things

In preparation for the bicycling leg of your triathlon competition, you are going to want to make sure that you have your bicycle helmet and your bicycle with your number already attached, your bike shoes, a working bike pump, a spare tire kit, a camelback or a water bottle, sunglasses, socks and optional bike gloves.

Preparation for Running, Pack These Things

In preparation for the running leg of your triathlon competition, you are going to want to make sure that you have your running shoes and a race belt that already has your number attached.

The Transitional Area

Preparation for the transitional area is a little different, so make sure that you have a towel, gels or power bars, body glide, an extra water bottle, sunscreen and lip balm, a large bike pump, a black market so that you do not have to stand in the body marking line, toilet paper, a basin that you can wash your feet in, optional anti-fog for your goggles, optional Vaseline, a large trash bag to handle any wet gear that you have and some way of locating your stuff such as a balloon or a friend that can locate you.

Preparation for a triathlon really isn’t difficult. When you plan ahead, make a list and check it a dozen times before you leave home, you can make sure that you do not forget any of the essentials that you really need come race day.

Strength Training for Triathlons

strengthtrainingStrength training is a vitally important part of your training program when you are a triathlete. Maximizing the quality level of your workout is going to need to be a prime objective if you want to develop a strength training program that is going to help you improve your performance.

Today there are a wide variety of different tools that an athlete will be able to use in order to get stronger and benefit themselves in other ways. There are also a number of things that you can reasonably avoid because they will not help you maximize your gains in training for your triathlon. Most machines that you find in a gym, for example, are an example of this concept. Triathletes are going to need to learn how to support and coordinate their own body in an effective manner in order to maximize their gains come race day.

The best way for you to maximize your triathlon training capabilities is to simulate the conditions of the race as much as you can. There are plenty of machines as well as contraptions out there but none of them are going to effectively train you for your triathlon because they are not simulating the race or benefiting your race training in any way. Here are three things that you should be focusing on instead:

1 – First and foremost, as a triathlete your number one focus should be on multiple joint, whole body types of exercises. Multiple joint exercises mean that you should be getting more than just a single joint involved one at a time in every exercise movement that you make. Squats and lunges are both excellent examples of multiple joint exercises because they simultaneously work the knees, the ankles and the hips all together when movement is produced. Multiple joint movements are the best thing that triathletes can do to train because these are things that triathletes do when they swim, bike and run during competition.

2 – Bands and free weights tend to be much more practical for a triathlete in comparison to machine workouts. When it comes to using these tools for the purpose of strength training you should be stabilizing the movement of your body more than if you were using a work out machine. This, in turn, will build more strength specific to planning and preparing for race day.

3 – Supporting your entire body while you are doing the exercises should be one of your main focuses. Sitting on a stable surface such as a machine is going to take away from the specificity of training for race day rather than contributing to it. Keep this in mind when it comes to choosing strength training workout options and varieties for your needs.

What Type of Bike to Get for a Triathlon

tribikeThere are a number of really important considerations to make when it comes to preparing yourself for your triathlon. Fitness and strength are two of the most important factors that are going to influence your performance as a triathlete, but the next important area where improvements are capable of being made is your triathlon equipment. You are obviously going to complete your race a lot faster when you have a bicycle that is specialized for your triathlon. If you want to go faster and move further, no matter what your level of expertise is, a triathlon specific type of bicycle is going to benefit you significantly.

When it comes to money, you need to understand that a triathlon bike is going to require a larger investment from you. In general on average, the power that is produced in order to pedal a bike on a flat road will involve 60 percent worth of rider drag. This is a place where you can gain some truly awesome performance gains. If you are really serious about performing in a triathlon, then you are going to need to choose the right type of equipment, which should be the best and the most efficient and effective equipment that you can possibly afford for the purpose of your triathlon cycling needs.

Road bikes or road bicycles are typically going to be designed to allow for comfort for cyclists that want to compete over longer distances. The triathlon bicycle on the other hand is generally designed to suit other distances that are relatively shorter in nature, meaning that comfort is capable of being compromised in exchange for an increase in speed. This is one of the most fundamental differences that exists between bikes intended for triathlons and those that are intended for the road.

The shorter that the distance of the triathlon is, the more aerodynamics and weight will come into play. For a sprint triathlon, for example, or a 20k, comfort is going to be far less of a factor than if you are dealing with an Ironman which is significantly longer in terms of distance. When it comes to an Ironman triathlon, comfort is going to become significantly more important to offering you continual high quality performance over a longer period of time.

When you are looking for a bicycle to serve your triathlon needs, you should be considering the distances that you are going to be competing for and then correlate this number with the budget that you think you have available for this purpose. It is highly recommended that you consider purchasing a used bike for your triathlon needs if your budget is tight. You can choose a higher quality bike and buy it used, and get it for a much better deal. If you scrimp on a new bike you may end up with a bad choice, and a bike that simply is not meeting your needs on the course.

Triathlon Training 101

triathlonGiven your background, do you know which triathlon training program is going to be ideal? Where does one even get started? We all come from vastly different injuries, backgrounds, genetics and so on and so forth, so there is no one size fits all solution to planning for a triathlon as a result. Choosing the right triathlon training plan is a vitally important decision that we have to make. If we select the right one, it will combat injury and burnout while driving us to success. If on the other hand we choose the wrong one, we could end up burnt out or injured as a result.

Consider the following questions when it comes to choosing a training plan for your triathlon aspirations:

  • Are you coming from a background of purely one sport, such as purely cycling, purely swimming or purely running, and you are looking to minimize your injuries while adding additional flavor to your training program?
  • Are you coming directly from the couch, and are looking for a way to lose weight while making positive impacts and changes in your life?
  • Have you spend time training in all three of these disciplines in the past, or have you performed in triathlons casually in the past but are looking for more structure or an improvement in your performance?
  • Are you looking to become a triathlete just to pad your resume?

If you are just coming off of the couch, then you are probably still in the determining process where you are not sure if you want to make this lifestyle change or not. The concept of a triathlon is a bit intimidating, but it is worthwhile if you are serious about finding a new fitness endeavor. You are going to need a program that will make you feel motivated and give you some pride and a feeling of achievement. There are a lot of things to learn and get used to when it comes to training in these sports, but rest assured there is no reason why you have to train in all three sports all at once – Just take your time and improve your capabilities in each sport one by one instead.

What are your goals? Most people are starting at a sprint level, even if they have not done another type of fitness sport in a good long while. A sprint plan will help you try out the training regimen and see if this is what you are really looking for. Sprints are a good start because they get you physically active without requiring long distance running in the process. Generally you should progress like this:

  1. Sprint
  2. Olympic
  3. Half Ironman
  4. Full Ironman

Though it is useful to note that not everyone progresses to step four – And you should stop whenever you are comfortable.

6 Tips for Beginner Triathlon Success

bsrIf you are a beginner to the world of triathlon racing, then you probably have a wide variety of different questions. The best advice that you can receive as a beginner planning for a first time triathlon is to take it easy and enjoy yourself, because triathlon racing should be fun, and it certainly isn’t brain surgery. Here are some tips for obtaining success in your first triathlon race:

1 – As a beginner in a first triathlon race, your training should be targeted for a shorter distance type of race such as a sprint triathlon race for example. Sometimes you may even be able to find a beginner triathlon race that is being advertised in your immediate area. Races are capable of filling up pretty quickly, so make sure that you sign up now if you are interested, and then you have a goal race that will help to keep you committed in your training.

2 – Come up with your own training plan for your first triathlon race. There are plenty of triathlon trainer plans that can be found online, in books or through gyms, so shop around until you find one that suits you.

3 – Work on your swimming as part of your training regimen for your triathlon race. Find a pool that you can train at. If you can possibly find a masters swimming program or a swim coach, do so, otherwise, look for a triathlon coach or an experienced triathlete that can help you with your training, because most beginners to the concept of a triathlon race have a big need for swimming practice.

4 – Beginner training for your triathlon race should include reasonable mileage. Do not over train in the beginning no matter how badly you want to, especially not if you are already reasonably strong as an athlete. As a triathlon trainer beginning a first triathlon race, you should work on the weakest event in your arsenal, making sure that you can finish the other events rather than necessarily worrying about winning them. After you finish your first triathlon race, then you can worry about building up speed and beating the other racers.

5 – Next, as part of your triathlon race training you are going to want to practice the transitions from event to event, but be careful not to go overboard. You can do brick workouts where you go for a bike workout and then transition into a running workout, but make sure that you are taking it easy rather than overwhelming yourself.

6 – Listen to the instructions before the race. If you have questions, ask them as soon as you can. Everyone was once a beginner to the triathlon race circuit, so do not be afraid to ask questions where you need answers, otherwise you may end up messing up because you were too shy to speak up.

Planning and Preparing for your Swimming Triathlon

swimmer1Make sure that you plan long ahead of time by making a list of the materials that you are going to need in order to participate in the swimming portion of your triathlon. Here is a list of basic supplies that you are going to need for your training regimen and the race itself.

  • Swimsuit
  • Cycling shorts or racing suit
  • Goggles
  • Cap
  • Anti-Fog Drops
  • Wetsuit (In races where it is allowed)
  • Lubricant (Anti-chafing)
  • Water Bottle for pre-race hydration
  • Watch or heart monitor
  • Plan for using all of these items

Training Tips:

Make sure that you are not overdoing your swimming workouts. For most triathlete participants, an adequate workout is between 30 minutes and 60 minutes, and you can have one workout per week that is 75 minutes to 90 minutes if you want a long and straight swim.

In order to set a goal time for your swimming, you need to determine what your threshold swimming pace is for 100 meters of swimming, then add 5 % or 10 % to accommodate navigation issues and also to compensate for a lack of walls, and then multiply that amount by the distance of the race. This time should be generally pretty accurate barring any strange occurrences such as being kicked in the stomach by a passing swimmer.

You need to learn how to swim smart, and you need to learn how to make yourself as efficiently as possible through the practice of good swimming technique. While improvement is capable of being measured by creating faster times, it is also capable of being achieved through the same amount of elapsed time by having to put less effort forth or having a lower heart rate. This will leave you with more reserves for the biking and the running legs of your triathlon competition, and it will allow you to result in a faster race time over all.

When you arrive at the site of the race, and you have finished setting yourself up for the race, you should head for the swimming part of the course and spend some time warming up. As you begin to do some swimming, you should be looking around for any navigational landmarks that are all around you. Think about where the sun is and make sure that it will not provide you with any swimming difficulties. Are your goggles, wetsuit and cap feeling okay, or do adjustments need to be made before the race is ready to begin?

Now you can line up for the start. Line up toward the front of the pack on the outside. You can drift back to your own pace more easily rather than having to work your way through a thick mass of swimmers and their splashing, after all.

Swimming for a Triathlon

swimtriHere are some tips for any triathlete when it comes to training and then racing in the swimming leg for any triathlon competition. The first leg for any triathlon is going to be the wettest one, and yet it should be the one that is the most relaxed and the most enjoyable as well. The swim does not have to be the hardest portion of this event, and yet it is critical that you perform well in order to correctly set yourself up for a productive bike and run.

Your swim should feel like it is a good effort and yet it should also feel relaxed, and this should be able to allow you to move confidently through the water but with the least possible expenditure of energy. The swim has to be fast enough that you can get to the bicycling portion of the race within a reasonable period of time, depending on what your personal goals are for the race at hand. The swim has to be controlled so that you maintain a feeling of confidence all throughout the leg, and you should stay positive, especially during the transition phase between swimming and bicycling.

Swimming efficiently and swimming within your own personal limits should be able to accomplish each and every one of these goals. You should design a personal training plan that allows you to do at least three or four effective swimming workouts every single week. Here are a few things that you are going to want to consider:

  • You are going to want to include a warm up period and a cool down period in every one of your work outs.
  • You are going to want to include some technique work for swimming in every one of your work outs.
  • You are going to want to incorporate easy swimming and good effort swimming levels of exertion in every one of your work outs.
  • You are going to want to participate in open water sessions whenever possible so that you can work on improving your navigational techniques in open water.
  • If you plan on using a wetsuit, then you are going to want to practice in one as well so that you can experience the differences between wetsuit swimming and swimming without a wetsuit prior to the day of the race.
  • You are going to want to make a list of all of the items that you are going to need for the entire swimming portion of the race, including what you need before the race, during the swimming leg of the race and during the transition phase between the swimming leg of the race and the bicycling leg. This will help you prepare for training and for the big race day as well.

Now go swimming!

Strength Training for a Triathlon

multijointStrength training is capable of being a vitally important part of the training program for all triathletes. Maximizing the quality of your workout should be your prime objective when it comes to developing a solid strength program that is going to benefit your triathlon progress. There are a wide variety of different tools today that you can use as an athlete in order to benefit yourself in strength training and getting stronger. You need to learn how to coordinate as well as support your own body as effectively as possible in order to maximize the gains that you receive by the time race day rolls around.

Some exercise machines appear to be good for the end result, but do not actually produce the results that people are looking for. One example of such a machine is the chest press machine. This machine will not allow you to get the most out of your strength training routine for triathlon training. The machine allows for you to sit down and then push your arms out straight using resistance, but this one track movement is actually preventing most of the muscles in your upper body from ever balancing a level of stability, which means that you are not getting the most out of this work out no matter how you try.

In order to get the absolute best possible results out of your training for a triathlon, you need to simulate the conditions of the race as best you can. The way that you can do this is to figure out the best ways to simulate the behaviors that you will exhibit in the race and work on those instead of machines that will not balance your core stability. Here are three things that you absolutely need to focus on in strength training for your upcoming triathlon.

- * As a triathlete you should be focusing on whole body exercises and exercises capable of working multiple joints at once. What multi-joint means is that more than a single joint should be getting involved in every exercise movement, such as squats and lunges for example.

- * Free weights as well as exercise bands tend to be more practical than machines when it comes to training for a triathlon. When you are using these particular tools for strength training, you have to stabilize your body much better than when a machine is doing some of the work for you.

- * You should be constantly aiming to support your entire body while you are doing your strength training exercises. If you sit on a stable surface like a weight machine, you will not be as balanced or prepared come race day.

If you keep these three things in mind, you will prepare yourself better for your triathlon because you will build a strong core and a good balance and stability unlike anything you had before you began your strength training routine.
