Your Triathlon Training Schedule

bikingtriathlonThe most important part of your triathlon training schedule will happen in the planning phase. It is important that your plan is well thought out and the time table is well defined for your training schedule to work well.

Those who are training for a triathlon must begin their training schedule for a year or so in advance of the race. It is always better to get started on the training a little early than too late. People who are training for triathlon events must become accustomed to the training schedules years in advance and be prepared to live according to the difficult lifestyle.

A triathlon is a test of your endurance for the most part and that is the reason that the training schedule must start years before the actual race. There are three events in a triathlon that will each test your endurance and that means that you have three times as much training to accomplish as a competitor in any other type of event.

Your training will have to include the physical exercise as well as mental skills to get through a triathlon. The positive attitude that you use during a triathlon will help you a great deal. When you are nearing the end of a triathlon, your muscles will be beginning to give out and you will need a positive attitude to help you complete the race. The triathlon training schedule should spend some time on the positive attitude that you will need to get through the race.

In the final days of your triathlon training schedule, you will be focused on preparing for the race in a more intense way. As the days tick by and the race gets even closer, resting your muscles and preparing for the day becomes more and more important. The final day before the race should include some rest that will prepare you for the test of endurance the next day. Not enough emphasis is placed on sleep and rest before this type of race.

Working with a professional trainer will help you to make sure that your triathlon training schedule is kept on track for the days before the big event. A professional understands the kind of work that you will need to do to prepare for this endurance test. You should make sure that you do your own research and reading about triathlon training so that you are fully prepared for the kind of work that must be accomplished.

Set down the timetable carefully in the beginning stages of your triathlon training schedule. These events are difficult and you will need a rigid training schedule to prepare you for the race. There is no other greater test of endurance than a triathlon which means that your training schedule is more important than ever. Work with your trainer to develop the triathlon training schedule that will get you in the best possible shape, prepare you mentally for the race and help you rise to the top of the pack on race day.

Triathlon Gear

If you are going to participate in a triathlon, having the best equipment is vital. Experience and endurance are important, but those will only go so far towards being at the top of your game. It will vastly depend on the athlete the sort of equipment needed, since every human body is different. There are basics that will apply to everyone who chooses to swim, own a bike or become a runner. These will help in choosing the right equipment that one needs to be at the top of your game.

Swimming Gear –

When it comes to swim gear, it all comes down to foot wear and other accessories. In the training stages, there are footwear that is designed to help you train by promoting proper leg posture and tempo while kicking and swimming. These training shoes will help you develop the proper technique to swim like the pros. Goggles and Swim Caps are also important, as goggles will help to maintain vision and swim caps will reduce the drag while swimming. When it comes time to compete, then the proper footwear will be shoes that allow breathing, and provide traction. For a triathlon, it is also important to have shoes that provide arch support for running and will be compatible with bike pedals.

Running Gear –

Once again, it is all about the foot gear and accessories. While training, a very helpful accessory is a pedometer or other means to track your progress. A map may be able to give you an estimate, but you can run over much more ground than can be shown on a map. An easily portable water container that will not throw you off balance is also a plus. When it comes time to choosing shoes, what is important is proper foot protection and support. The shoes have to support the arch of your foot; otherwise you’ll fatigue much faster, and risk hurting your foot. All runners have a specific style that makes them unique, and finding the shoes that fit your running style is vital if you want to do your best on the track. Proper elemental protection is also good, in case of deep puddles, snow rain, or other debris. When in a triathlon, it is very beneficial to have shoes that will also double as swim shoes.

Bicycles –

Choosing the right bicycle is an important task and depends heavily on the intended application. The first consideration is the terrain; will you off road, or will you stick to paved surfaces? That is the question that will determine if you will get a mountain bike or a road bike. A mountain bike has a wide tire with deep treads, to ensure traction over a variety of terrain types. Built in suspension will reduce rider fatigue, and also ensure good contact with the ground. Conversely, a road tire is thin to reduce friction (and make it less likely to puncture a tire on road debris). There are treads on the tires as well, but they are more shallow, being only designed for riding in wet conditions. Then there are bicycles that are in between, designed primarily for road use, but capable of holding it’s own off the road.

Bicycle Gear –

This includes not only the ever important helmet, but also the appropriate accessories for bicycle maintenance. This includes grease and lubricant for the various parts of the bike, replacement parts for spokes and chains, and the tools necessary to tear down the bike and put it back together. Your bicycle is a precision machine that needs to be well maintained; otherwise it will not run as efficiently or as safely. There are a myriad of different options available to you when it comes to bicycles, including bicycles intended for scaling hills and rough terrain, and those that are meant for the road. Having the right bicycle is important, because each features characteristics that are meant to appeal to its primary applications. A road bike will not stand up against the rugged terrain that a mountain bike is meant to handle, for example. And a mountain bike’s numerous speeds and settings will be useless on the road. Choosing the right bicycle and the right bicycling accessories is vital if you want to get the most out of your ride.

Swimming, biking and running are the three activities that, when combined, form a triathlon. Having the best equipment if you intend to participate in these events is absolutely vital, because it will boost your capabilities and increase your ability to do well. Endurance and experience are both vital statistics, but they will really only go so far when it comes to reaching the top of your game. Because every body is different, finding the equipment and gear that will best suit your needs is going to depend heavily upon testing and trying out different brands, sizes and styles until you find what suits your needs best. A runner cannot win races without shoes that accommodate his or her running style. A bicyclist cannot climb mountains or ride to the head of the pack in a race without the right bicycle to accommodate him or her. And without the right goggles, swimsuit and swim cap, a swimmer cannot efficiently glide across the water to win races.

SwimBikeRunner.com is designed to cater to the athlete who is serious about the gear that he or she utilizes in order to win. If you are serious about improving your swim times, riding faster and further than before or running more efficiently than ever, then the products that you find within these pages will benefit you tremendously. Regardless of whether you are looking for the best swimming apparel, the right running shoes or the best bicycle or bicycling gear to help improve your sport of choice, or all three for that matter, you will only find top of the line name brand solutions here at SwimBikeRunner.com.

Training Tips For Upcoming Biking Season

With summer just a short time a way, many people are dusting off their bikes and preparing to get back out on the bike trails as well as prepare for the various bike races that will be all over the country. Though some more hardcore bikers never put their bike away for the winter, there’s more to the sport than just jumping on your bike and taking off. There are many training tips that people could use that, if they’re interested in getting into this recreation, would greatly improve their performance out on the road.

There’s a common misconception that endurance is the name of the game. This is totally wrong. Given that, if you’re enrolling in bike tournaments or races, you need to take a lot of breaks. This is to eat and stretch. Even if it’s just for the day or during a multi-day cycle tour, you need to consume calories and energy. Also, if you don’t stretch, you body will give out later on. Think of this as stretching out parts of your body that are super tense from all of the exercise it’s getting and fueling your body with the necessary nutrients is essential. Eat really nutrient dense foods like fruits, hard-boiled eggs, and nuts. It’s a great way to keep your electrolyte levels high so you don’t burn out on your trek.

Make sure you’re using the proper equipment. This is half the battle. By using cycling shoes and a good bike seat, you can greatly reduce the strain on your body overall. Also, getting your bicycle tuned-up regularly does a world of good. You might not notice the difference but an un-tuned bike runs roughly and ends up working against the rider and can end up greatly subtracting from their overall performance. You want to put as little strain on your body as possible to get the best performance out of your body that you can. That’s why it’s a good idea to take yoga classes and use chairs for lower back pain. Use these tips to reduce the stress on your body and increase your endurance.

Get your bike “fit” for performance. This isn’t just getting a tune up. It’s kind of like retooling your bike to maximize its performance and make it fine-tuned to your body’s shape and contours. This is a big deal in the cycling community and many people who just think of a bike is something to jump on and go often regret not having this done sooner. You can get this done at your local bike shop.

So in order to maximize you’re riding efficiency, use some of these steps and training techniques to ensure that you’re able to perform at your peak. Even if you’re not a serious rider, you can still do some of these things to lower the stress that’s placed on your body just as a recreational biker. You might not feel it now but down the road you could end up with arthritis or joint issues that were exacerbated by your biking excursions.

Triathlon Training: Distances

triswimGoals are exceptional to have, but you should only be setting goals that are truly realistic. If you are setting training goals that are well beyond your capabilities, then you are going to end up getting hurt and failing as a result. With this in mind, keep it in mind that a triathlon is a sport where moderation is the key above all else. You need to utilize both patience and rest as important keys to your triathlon training plan.

Unlike with other types of sports, if you do every single workout at the maximum level of intensity as well as duration, then you are going to end up overtraining your body to the point of fatigue, injury and sickness. Do not get me wrong, there are times for maximum intensity in detailed triathlon training programs, but never all the time, no matter what.

Here are some of the common distances for triathlons:

Swimming:

  • Sprint – 0.5 Mile
  • Olympic – 0.93 Mile
  • Half Ironman – 1.2 Mile
  • Full Ironman – 2.4 Mile

Biking:

  • Sprint – 13 Mile
  • Olympic – 24.8 Mile
  • Half Ironman – 56 Mile
  • Full Ironman – 112 Mile

Running:

  • Sprint – 3.2 Mile
  • Olympic – 6.2 Mile
  • Half Ironman – 13.1 Mile
  • Full Ironman – 26.2 Mile

When you look at these common distances for triathlon competitions, you should see that the next levels double in distance, then you should make the assumption that you should only be covering two different consecutive distances in a single season. The rationale here is that we cannot simply continue to build on our endurance base unless we are giving ourselves the proper level of rest and maintenance as well.

If you are a total beginner, then you should begin training for a sprint race. Progress to Olympic at the end of the same year if you have no injuries upon re-evaluation.

If you are established an endurance base at the Olympic level in the first year, and maintained that endurance base over the winter, then you can progress to the half ironman in the next year. You my even be able to progress to the full ironman, but you need to be careful that you are not overdoing things and possibly putting yourself in danger of getting hurt in the process.

Building and maintaining a truly solid base over a long period of time is going to be vitally important for you to achieve before you build yourself up to the next level. When you build up a deep base like this, you will be drastically reducing your risk of sustaining an injury. You cannot keep building yourself up without some time for maintenance, no matter how strong or tough you think that you are. Strong and solid foundations are what is truly going to get you to the ironman distance, or whatever other goals you happen to have at the time. Keep in mind: There is no hurry, and Triathlete training is all about maintenance and patience, so do things the right way if you want to achieve your goals.

Swimming in Your Triathlon

swimmerThe first leg of every triathlon is going to be the wettest, but it really also should be the most relaxed and the most enjoyable leg of the race. If you experience a good swim, then the rest of your race is going to be good as well regardless of your ability. Some triathlons are short while others are long, but any way you look at it, you are going to have to do some swimming. The swimming aspect of your triathlon needs to feel like you put forth a good effort, but it should also be relatively relaxed, and you should be moving through the water while expending as little energy as possible. The swim needs to be fast, but you should not overwhelm yourself because you still have two more legs to get through, and they tend to be significantly more complicated.

Swimming efficiently as well as swimming within your own personal limits is going to allow you to accomplish all of the goals mentioned above and more. You need to be able to design a personal training plan for your triathlon swimming that is going to allow you to complete between three and four swimming workouts every single week. Here are some things that you should consider when putting such a training plan together:

  • Your workout should always have a warm up period and a cool down period.
  • Your workout should always include some technique work for swimming.
  • One or two of your workouts should offer primarily easy requirements for swimming with low rest, base endurance at approximately 60 % to 70 % of your max heart rate.
  • One workout per week needs to include a sustained swim at a fast-as-you-can-go pace for the entire length of the swim.
  • One workout should include shorter, faster work but it should offer more rest in between repeats.
  • You should do plenty of open water sessions, as often as you can, so that you can practice your techniques with navigation.
  • You should determine whether or not kicking technique will be necessary. If you are going to be swimming using a wet suit, then you are not going to need kicking very much if at all.
  • Even if you do not plan on using a wet suit for your swim, some of your swims should be done with a wet suit for practice, just in case you end up changing your mind and using a wetsuit after all.

Make sure to change up your workouts as much as you can, because the more practice that you get, the better prepared you will be to handle anything that happens during the swimming portion of the triathlon. Keep this in mind when you are practicing, and spend at least several weeks before the triathlon event practicing your swimming for the best possible results.

Swimming Drills to Improve Speed and Endurance

One thing most any person who was on a swim team will lament is swimming drills. They will tell you tales of torturous coaches who created long drills. They will tell tales of practices which seemed to last all day and left them drained. All will admit in the end the drills made a difference in their ability to swim strong and outlast the competition. These are drills which you can complete yourself with the same stellar results. The important thing to remember is you may not enjoy the drills while you are doing them. Stick with it and you will see undeniable results.

Pyramid Drills

One of the swimming drills which are done by most coaches is the pyramid drill. This drill involves starting with a short sprint of about 50 yards and then building gradually to 500 yards. You then go back down to 50 yards. The trick is to allow only a certain amount of time for each interval as you go up and down. You will notice a difference in your ability to complete the intervals as your strength and skill improves. You will crave the breaks as well as the increased speed this drill will help to create.

Timed Drills

This is a drill which is similar in nature to the pyramid drills. The difference in the timed swimming drills is you maintain a certain length of swimming. The amount of total time in which you have to complete the length will remain constant. What will change is the length of the intervals. A normal overall length for these drills is 500 yards. You will start with 25 x 50 yard drills. Increase to 1 x 500 yard drill with either 25 or 50 yard increases. The goal is to increase your endurance by increasing the speed at which you can complete the sections.

Drag Drills

Creating drag is one of the swimming drills every coach seems to like to use. This means using kick boards, floaters or weights to create drag and resistance. The object is to complete increasing lengths every time you work out. This will help to develop the strength in upper and lower body strength. You will train your muscles to pull an even heavier load than your body weight. This way when you are swimming without the resistance you will be able to glide through the water. This is also a good opportunity to concentrate on your swim stroke.

Closed Fist Drill

There are many variations on swimming drills which do not occur normally to people. Closed fist drill is a drill which teaches you to use your forearm as a mechanism to pull you through the water. By not being able to use your hand to pull you through the water, you have to use the forearm to pull you. The drill is completed by completing 10 x 25 yard sets. Start out with untimed sets with a one minute rest between. Gradually work in time restrictions with less rest in between swims.

Triathlon Tips Which Really Work

Competing in a triathlon is one of the most challenging experiences you can hope for. This is why so many people look for good triathlon tips. This is because while many will be happy just to finish, others would like to move up in the rankings as they compete in more competitions. There are many tips out there, but it is not always easy to find the gems of wisdom. This is because not all tips work for all people. There are tips, however which work for everyone. Following these tips will help you to perform better in your next event.

Train with Your Race Bike

You probably spent a lot of money on a good triathlon bike. This is why you do not train with it. You want for the bike to last you as long as possible. Actually, one of the best triathlon tips goes directly against this mentality. You see if you are used to one bike from your training, you will not do as well in the actual race. This is because the gears will catch in different places and the overall bike will feel differently. Training with the race bike will allow you to become intimate with the bike you will use in the race. This will help you to perform much better and prevent unnecessary problems.

Allow Your Body to Rest

Among the most ignored triathlon tips is in regards to resting your body. People will feel inclined to work out as much as possible up to the date of the race. This is a problem because you can injure yourself. Even at extreme fitness levels you can cause deep muscle tearing if you do not allow your muscles time to relax. This means taking at least one day off completely from any training. You will be stronger and have greater endurance if you do so. You will also have an easier time of avoiding injury.

Swim in the Water You Will Race

Completing swimming drills in a pool is good to build strength, but you should make every effort to train in the water you will race in. This is one of the triathlon tips which are not possible for everyone to do every day. You should do this as often as possible for the reason that you need to learn the proper cadence for your swimming. This can only be learned when you enter the body of water like you will in the race and are allowed to swim continuous.

Find a Good Pace

It is easy to spot someone who did not look into triathlon tips before the race. This is because they will attack the swimming portion with all the energy they have. This will cause many people to drop out quickly once they get on their bikes. Find a good pace in your training and stick with that when you start the race. Keep your pace throughout the race. The only time you should actually sprint is when you near the end of the race.

Training to Run the Right Way

When competing in a race which involves running, there are a few different pointers which need to be kept in mind. Some people feel their normal run in the morning will suffice in training to run. This is wrong because you will not be training yourself higher levels of endurance or performance. You need to set a schedule, log your accomplishments and find a good pace. You will also need to invest money into a good pair of shoes and running clothes. If you stick to these pointers you will be able to do more than just finish the race.

Buying the Right Equipment

The very first thing you need to do when training to run is making sure you have the right equipment. This includes having a good pair of sneakers. Many runners have taken to having their feet analyzed to get all of the support they need while running. Some have even taken to getting custom made sneakers. Make sure the sneakers you buy and train with are the same ones you will be racing in. This goes for the clothes you will be wearing for the race as well. You need to be familiar with how everything will feel as you run to get the maximum performance in the race.

Setting an Effective Running Schedule

Next, you need to create a running schedule which will help you maximize your performance. This includes mapping out routes and setting goals while training to run. You should take into account your past performance when setting your schedule. Try not to set your schedule too far in advance so you can change things up as your performance level increases. Make sure that you are not increasing distances or lengths of time running at too fast of intervals. This can put a dangerous strain on your body. Only go up a maximum of 10% per week.

Keeping a Running Log

After every run you should sit down and write out everything which happened on your run. This includes times, speeds and routes taken. You may even want to log weather conditions. This will help you to track everything which happens while training to run. You will be able to map out changes in performance and problems encountered. This will help you in creating your schedule and finding what works for you in training and in racing.

Finding Your Race Pace

One of the most important things when training to run is finding a comfortable pace. This is important so that you can maximize your performance throughout your run. If you waste all of your energy at the beginning of the race, you will have nothing left at the end. A good pace will make it possible for you to sprint at the end of the race. This is the sign of a seasoned runner who has good discipline. Those who keep a good pace for themselves while running will actually outperform those who tried to run hard at the beginning of the race.

Triathlon Training 101

biketrainingAre you planning on training for your first triathlon? This is not an easy task for anyone to master if they do not know the ropes. There are three completely unique disciplines that are involved, and you are also going to need to be lifting weights and training in other ways. How are you going to find the time that you need in order to achieve this goal? This particular answer is actually a great deal easier than you think, if you have prepared yourself by choosing the right first triathlon.

In other words, let us start by selecting the right first triathlon. There are four different triathlon distances that you can choose from. The shortest distance types of triathlons are known as sprints. Because they are so short, they really are more like a sprint in nature, and therefore are typically regarded as the hardest ones to master. The second type of distance for a triathlon is twice what the sprint typically is, known as the international distance or Olympic distance triathlon. Where the sprint would end with a 5K run, the Olympic distance triathlon is going to end with 10K run. The Olympic distance type of triathlon is generally the most common one that you will find.

Once you have mastered what the sprint as well as the Olympic triathlon lengths have to offer, the third type of triathlon is the half ironman triathlon. This is a race that concludes through a 13.1 mile run. The final type of distance is the ironman distance, which ends with a 26.2 mile run. If you are doing your first ever triathlon, then you should be avoiding these two types of triathlon for fairly obvious reasons. Even if you do believe that you have the stamina as well as the endurance necessary for such a length, triathlons are about more than simply physical fitness. You need to work all of the kinks out with one of the smaller triathlon events in order to prepare yourself mentally as well as physically for the longer triathlon events.

The sprint distance is typically 400 yards worth of swimming, 5 miles worth of biking and then 5K worth of running. You can spend time practicing for all of these triathlon events together, but if you do not learn how to transition from one to the next, and the second to the third, then you really are not as prepared as you think you are. Your goal for your very first triathlon training event should be to combine your running days and your biking days. Each and every single time that you get off your bike, you should begin running, even if you are only running for a few hundred yards. There is a serious muscle transition that needs to occur from pushing on your bike pedals to running. This particular muscle transition needed to excel in triathlon competitions is difficult to achieve unless you have spent time practicing, so do so!
