With summer just a short time a way, many people are dusting off their bikes and preparing to get back out on the bike trails as well as prepare for the various bike races that will be all over the country. Though some more hardcore bikers never put their bike away for the winter, there’s more to the sport than just jumping on your bike and taking off. There are many training tips that people could use that, if they’re interested in getting into this recreation, would greatly improve their performance out on the road.
There’s a common misconception that endurance is the name of the game. This is totally wrong. Given that, if you’re enrolling in bike tournaments or races, you need to take a lot of breaks. This is to eat and stretch. Even if it’s just for the day or during a multi-day cycle tour, you need to consume calories and energy. Also, if you don’t stretch, you body will give out later on. Think of this as stretching out parts of your body that are super tense from all of the exercise it’s getting and fueling your body with the necessary nutrients is essential. Eat really nutrient dense foods like fruits, hard-boiled eggs, and nuts. It’s a great way to keep your electrolyte levels high so you don’t burn out on your trek.
Make sure you’re using the proper equipment. This is half the battle. By using cycling shoes and a good bike seat, you can greatly reduce the strain on your body overall. Also, getting your bicycle tuned-up regularly does a world of good. You might not notice the difference but an un-tuned bike runs roughly and ends up working against the rider and can end up greatly subtracting from their overall performance. You want to put as little strain on your body as possible to get the best performance out of your body that you can. That’s why it’s a good idea to take yoga classes and use chairs for lower back pain. Use these tips to reduce the stress on your body and increase your endurance.
Get your bike “fit” for performance. This isn’t just getting a tune up. It’s kind of like retooling your bike to maximize its performance and make it fine-tuned to your body’s shape and contours. This is a big deal in the cycling community and many people who just think of a bike is something to jump on and go often regret not having this done sooner. You can get this done at your local bike shop.
So in order to maximize you’re riding efficiency, use some of these steps and training techniques to ensure that you’re able to perform at your peak. Even if you’re not a serious rider, you can still do some of these things to lower the stress that’s placed on your body just as a recreational biker. You might not feel it now but down the road you could end up with arthritis or joint issues that were exacerbated by your biking excursions.

You have probably spent months if not years preparing for the upcoming triathlon race, so in all honestly, the last thing that you need right now is to have your mind wandering to things that you may have forgot. Why worry about whether or not you forgot something, when putting together an effective packing list takes so little time? There is no doubt about it, if you want to get a new personal record, you need to keep your mind on the race rather than on other things. This unique packing list is designed to help you remember everything that you need to bring for your triathlon so that you can prepare your gear and be completely prepared in time for the big day which is probably just around the corner.
You may not need to use everything on the list, but being over prepared is always infinitely more beneficial than being under prepared. These items are listed individually, but you may need more of a certain item depending on the distance of the race and other factors. For example, when we mention ‘water bottle’, what we mean to say is ‘enough water to get you through the race’, and the same goes for electrolyte drinks and energy gels as well.
Personal Items to Pack:
- Identification, race registration papers, and other important documentation. Be sure you have your USAT Card.
- Clothing, including a jersey, tri-shorts, socks, shoes and anything else you may need before and after the race.
- Towels for the staging area, make sure to bring two or three, more if you like.
- Body Glide Skin Lubricant
, in order to prevent chafing.
- Sunglasses, in case it is too bright outside to manage. Plus the UV protection is good for your eyes.
- Energy Gels
, to keep your energy up between events.
- Electrolyte Drink
, excellent for restoring electrolytes more quickly than water.
- Watch, with timer or stop watch function is best.
- MP3 player, should the event happen to allow the use of them. Very good for getting into your groove and staying motivated.
Swimming items to pack:
- Swimming cap.
- Swimming goggles.
- Swimsuit/Swim Trunks/Wetsuit.
Biking Items to pack:
- Your bicycle, obviously. Can’t do this portion of the event without one.
- A sturdy helmet,
- Water bottle – make sure your bike has a water bottle cage or it’s too difficult to juggle.
- Spare tire.
- CO2 Bike Pump
and CO2 Cartridge
.
- Hex Bike Tool
for repairs. Hopefully you won’t need it, but if you do it’s easier to have this on you than not.
- Cycling Gloves
to protect your hands. Full-finger is especially useful in events that happen during the winter.
- Road Cycling Shoe
Running Items to Pack:
- Running hat or running visor, something to protect your face.
- Proper running shoes.
- Fuel Belt
with water, energy gels and other vital equipment.
As this is a lot of stuff you need to make sure that you have a bag that is big enough to carry everything in. The only thing you won’t need is the cat! You should take a few weeks to get everything ready so that you are completely prepared in time for the event. Knowing that you are prepared for the race so long in advance should help you focus on your training.
