December 3rd, 2011 — Swimming, Triathlon Tips, Triathlon Training
Here are some tips for any triathlete when it comes to training and then racing in the swimming leg for any triathlon competition. The first leg for any triathlon is going to be the wettest one, and yet it should be the one that is the most relaxed and the most enjoyable as well. The swim does not have to be the hardest portion of this event, and yet it is critical that you perform well in order to correctly set yourself up for a productive bike and run.
Your swim should feel like it is a good effort and yet it should also feel relaxed, and this should be able to allow you to move confidently through the water but with the least possible expenditure of energy. The swim has to be fast enough that you can get to the bicycling portion of the race within a reasonable period of time, depending on what your personal goals are for the race at hand. The swim has to be controlled so that you maintain a feeling of confidence all throughout the leg, and you should stay positive, especially during the transition phase between swimming and bicycling.
Swimming efficiently and swimming within your own personal limits should be able to accomplish each and every one of these goals. You should design a personal training plan that allows you to do at least three or four effective swimming workouts every single week. Here are a few things that you are going to want to consider:
- You are going to want to include a warm up period and a cool down period in every one of your work outs.
- You are going to want to include some technique work for swimming in every one of your work outs.
- You are going to want to incorporate easy swimming and good effort swimming levels of exertion in every one of your work outs.
- You are going to want to participate in open water sessions whenever possible so that you can work on improving your navigational techniques in open water.
- If you plan on using a wetsuit, then you are going to want to practice in one as well so that you can experience the differences between wetsuit swimming and swimming without a wetsuit prior to the day of the race.
- You are going to want to make a list of all of the items that you are going to need for the entire swimming portion of the race, including what you need before the race, during the swimming leg of the race and during the transition phase between the swimming leg of the race and the bicycling leg. This will help you prepare for training and for the big race day as well.
Now go swimming!

November 28th, 2011 — Running, Swim Bike Run
Winter running is a challenge because of many different factors. Depending on where you live, you may have to face conditions which will include snow and ice. If nothing else, you will have to face lower than usual temperatures. This is enough to cause some people to put off running again until the summer. This is not necessary as long as you are making the right preparations. It is possible to run in some comfort no matter what the weather throws at you.
The Right Sneakers
The conditions you will face during winter running will mean you will need to wear sneakers which will grip the road even when there is ice and snow. These are like snow tires for your feet. The sneakers you want to wear will have softer rubber. This is because the rubber will harden slightly in the increased cold conditions. The softer rubber will grab onto the snow and ice rather than causing you to slip. This will allow you to run in confidence rather than in fear throughout the winter season.
The Right Under-Gear
Before layering up for winter running, make sure you are wearing clothes which will be comfortable. This means wearing clothes which will provide warmth without adding too much bulk. One of the best types of clothing to wear directly against the skin is made out of bamboo fibers. This is because you will draw moisture away from your body with the wicking ability of the fabric. The natural insulating capability of the material will also allow you to stay warm without huge layers of clothing. You can then layer on leggings, a pull over and a light jacket. You will generate your own heat as you run. You can then start stripping off unnecessary layers.
Protect Your Face
Keep in mind in winter running you may encounter harsh winds which will cause your face to become wind chapped. To avoid this you can wear something as simple as a bandana over your nose and mouth. Because this can restrict breathing, you are better off wearing a face mask which is designed for skiing. This will have openings for your mouth and nose which you can breathe through. You can wear a hat and sunglasses to keep your entire face safe from a painful lashing from the harsh winter winds.
Running on a Treadmill
If all else fails for running outside, you may want to hop on the treadmill. While you are sure to want to run on the ground instead, winter running is simply not always possible. You are much better off running on a treadmill rather than taking the day off. For many people taking one day off will simply lead to giving themselves permission to take more days off until you stop running altogether. Other people are training for a marathon and cannot lose the day of running. The treadmill is a life saver in these occasions. You may also want to find an indoor track you can run.

People every year discover a joy never realized before in riding a bicycle. What most people face is a huge dilemma when they go to buy a beginner road bike. Even talking to friends about what they recommend is enough to blow your mind. You end up with a lot of information which does not make any sense to you. What you find out later is there are many different aspects of a bike which make it better suited to one person than another. You have to find what your own personal preferences are.
Starting Off With a Used Bike
Getting you on the road with a beginner bike is the most important thing. Good advice here is to buy one from a bike club, bike shop or the Salvation Army. Before you buy the bike, make sure you get measured to find out what size bike is best for you. You can then buy an inexpensive bike which is well suited to your needs. Make sure to have the bike checked for a tune up by your local bike shop before you hit the road. You should be able to get on the road for less than $100.
Take Some Bicycling Classes
If you live in or near a major city, there is most likely a few different cycling clubs you can join. Joining the club will help you to get lessons on how to more effectively ride your new beginner road bike. As you learn, you will learn all the different features which your bike has and how they help you to ride better. You will also learn which elements you would like to improve about your own ride. Once you have learned the range which your bike is capable of, you will be ready to make a better decision on the bike you will buy.
Pricing a New Bike
Armed with knowledge about what you really want in a good beginner road bike, you are ready to make your first real purchase. You can approach the different bikes available to you with more confidence. While price should not usually be a deciding factor in which bike you will buy, it should be for your first new bike. This is because while you have more information than an absolute newbie, you are still pretty fresh on the scene. Buy a good bike in the thousand dollar range and after a couple years, you will know exactly what $5000 bike you want to buy.

Many people buying a beginner road bike want it for triathlons. The beginner bike is still a good idea as you get used to riding the bike. You can even complete your first triathlon with a beginner bike. As your skills progress, you will find more benefit in buying a triathlon bike. You will find you are able to run better after the bike portion. You will also find you are able to have less impact on your back muscles.
