Swimming is a sport which many people engage in either by itself or as a part of a triathlon. You can use it for general fitness or as a sport. Those looking for greater speed from their swimming will need to have the right swim technique. This means paying attention to your form and how you move your arms and legs while you are swimming. The better technique you have, the faster you will be able to slice through the water.
Steam Lining
Proper swim technique starts with thinking about your body and how it reacts with the water. This includes the very moment your body enters the water. Your body hands should directly above your head with one hand over the other. Your head should be dipped under your arms. If you were to take a picture of your body from straight on, you will see how little there is for the water to catch on to. This reduction in lag will allow your body to easily slip into the water. Evidence of this can further be seen by taking video as you dive in. With this method, you will notice less of a splash as you enter the water.
S-Stroke
The majority of people swimming for sport will use a freestyle swim technique. Take a look at the way you drag your arm through the water. If you are like most people without any training, you will pull your arm straight through the water. The problem with this is you will only really be pushing your body a third of the length of the stroke. This is because as your hand moves through the water is creates a current. After a moment, your hand is literally pushing itself through the water.
To get more pull from every stroke, start with your hand entering the water with your thumb hitting the water first. Push out and down until your hand is just outside your shoulder. Next, pull your hand back in towards the center of your chest and groin. Last, push your hand back out towards your hip and out of the water. If you look at the whole stroke in relation to your body, you will notice an S-pattern against your body. This stroke will give you maximum pull so you can move through the water faster. This is a swim technique which can be practiced outside of the water before trying it in the water.
Controlling Your Breathing
Another swim technique which can help you to swim faster is to control your breathing. You will notice some swimmers will be breathing at every opportunity they get. The problem with this is while your head is out of the water you are creating a lot of drag. This can be avoided by paying attention to when and how you breathe. Take a good full breath when you do breathe so you can go two strokes without taking a breath. You should be able to go at least two strokes in between each breathe.

Swimming is one of the few sports in which the entire body gets worked out. This is why so many people are swimming for fitness. They like the idea that 30 minutes in the pool is like an hour on the track. The problem some people find in the swimming is monotony. This is why many people have been turning to competitions as a way to excite things a little bit. This is a fun way for even those who are not competitive to have another reason to get in the pool and give it their all.
Swimming Meets
Most any gym which offers swimming for fitness will have some kind of swim meet they hold. If you cannot find one at your gym, you can often find them in the parks and recreation department of your area. You can sign up for the age group or skill level you are at. This will allow you to get involved in a competition which will be at your level. As your strength and skills progress you can elevate the level of competition you are entered into.
Swim Clubs
Most cities will have swim clubs you can join up with. These are clubs which go well beyond swimming for fitness. In fact, these are the kinds of organizations which are responsible for training Olympic athletes as well as professional athletes. You will be able to find higher levels of competition, not to mention better instruction to improve your swimming techniques. Not all swim clubs are open to the public. You may have to meet some qualifications before you are able to join. Just take a look at the club you are thinking about joining before asking to become a member to make sure you qualify.
Competing in Triathlons
For those who pursue more than just swimming for fitness, the triathlon is a great way to take your competition to the next level. This is a competition which includes swimming, biking and running. It is a total test of your abilities both in strength and in stamina. Most people are happy with just finishing the triathlon, so there is no shame if you do not come in the top ten. Training for such an event will take your fitness to a whole new level. To understand the scope of the competition, imagine your average swimming workout and then add biking and running to it.
Maintaining Fun
No matter whether you are swimming for fitness or for competition, make sure you make it fun. This is the only way you will be able to approach the training you will have to accomplish every day without resenting it. Your training and your exercise should not be something you force yourself to do. If it is, you are just doing the wrong thing. Finding something which will be fun for you will allow you to return to it every day with excitement. This will help you to stay fit as well as bring more joy into your life.

Swim training can be a challenge when you do not have the right swimming facilities to train in. The good news is there are facilities available to you no matter where you live. Some will be more convenient to use than others. Finding the right place to train is important whether you are looking to train for a swim meet or for a triathlon. This is important so that you can get the training you need in the environment which you need it. This is the only way you will get the preparation you will need to compete at the right level.
Outdoor Swimming for Triathlon Training
It is not recommended you train for a triathlon by always swimming in indoor swimming facilities. This is because when you are swimming for your triathlon you will not be doing and flip turns. You need to train in an environment which will be similar to the environment you will be swimming in for your race. This is so you can get your cadence down. You should try to train at least once a week in an open area for a free swim. This can be a lake or in the ocean depending on where your event will be held.
Swimming Pools in Gyms
A very popular option for people looking for the right swimming facilities is to join a gym with a pool. This is because you will get the benefit of swimming in a 25 yard length pool. This allows you the ability to know how long you are doing specific exercises like kick board training, paddle board training and floater training. You will also have access to a large clock on the wall in which you can time your training and log your success in interval training or other styles of training.
Swimming Pools in Swim Clubs
For those looking for another level of swimming facilities to train in, there are swim clubs you can join. These have facilities which are nothing more than a pool which is warehoused in a natatorium. You will get the benefit of being able to train all year long. You will also get the advantage of great coaching advice from those who run the facility and the club. Remember, these types of clubs are usually used by those training for the Olympics and professionally.
Training at Home
If you have the money and cannot find the right swimming facilities for you, it is possible to build your own. A popular option which many people have been investing in is a swimming simulator. This is a pool of water which is no bigger than a hot tub. It has a water propulsion chamber which will create a flow of water at the speed you prefer. This will allow you to swim as long as you want to without having to build a full sized pool. You can even get units which are heated. This will allow you to train all year long right in your back yard.

As technical as the swimming sport can be, it can generally be tough to narrow down solutions to a question that is asked often: What should I concentrate on in order to improve my triathlon swim capabilities? Here are five steps that you can take to improve your swim for an upcoming triathlon. These do not necessarily fit into any specific order, and they will go a very long way when it comes to helping you achieve your personal swimming goals regardless of whether you are just beginning or are attempting to go professional.
1 – Improve your hand entry in order to improve your triathlon swimming ability. Slice your hand down into the water right around the line of your goggles, driving it forward. Many swimmers will attempt to get as much air time as they possibly can simply by reaching their hand out before they enter into the water. It is actually much more efficient for you to go through the water with your hand as you are rotating from one side toward the other side.
2 – Improve your head position in order to improve your triathlon swimming ability. You should keep looking straight down when you are swimming in the freestyle form. It is vitally important that you keep your head completely down with a small part of the back of your head poking out of the water. As you rotate throughout the water, try not to move your head when the rest of your body is rotating.
3 – Improve your pull in order to improve your triathlon swimming ability. When you are swimming in freestyle, your hands need to pull all the way past your hips. The last portion of the stroke before your recovery, which is when hands come out of the water, should include an acceleration behind you rather than up and out of the water.
4 – Improve your kick in order to improve your triathlon swimming ability. You should try to minimize your kick as you work on your training for swimming. Most people are going to try to kick extra hard in order to make up for a lack of balance while in the water. You should be minimizing your kick in order to improve your balance as well as to conserve energy.
5 – Improve your training intensity in order to improve your triathlon swimming ability. The best way that you can measure the intensity of your training is to count your heart rate following every swim. Estimate your heart rates by counting your pulse for six seconds, then add a zero to the count and you will have the approximate heart rate per minute for your training.
These five tips are simple and straight forward but they really go along way when it comes to increasing your capabilities as a swimmer in a triathlon event.

Charity is alive and well in the modern culture. This is seen in the donation drives as well as the charitable events which are held every day. For those who are into running, there are many ways you can do your part by running for charity. While some people will compete in the events just to help with a good cause, this is also a great opportunity for you to test your fitness level. This is a great way to turn something you do for fun into something you can do to help out others.
Finding a Charitable Event
There are several running for charity events held every year in cities around the nation. Finding them is quite often as easy as looking in the newspaper. Another very good source for these types of events is through the internet. You can find the events in the running schedule for your city. Another great source to find these kinds of events is through running clubs and stores which support running events often. They will have sections within the store where they list all upcoming events you can sign up for.
Getting Involved
Once you have found an event, the next step in running for charity is signing up. Depending on the event, this can include a registration fee. Others will ask you to find sponsors for your run. Many people like to sign up for runs which ask you to find sponsors. This involves you having people sign up to donate money depending on if you finish, and the place which you finish. The reason why many people prefer this is because it allows them to earn even more money for the charitable event than simply donating a registration fee.
Training for the Race
For some people, running for charity is something they are doing as a part of their training for another event. This can be another running event or it can be a triathlon. For others, the race itself is what they are training for. If this is your case, make sure your everyday runs are longer than what the actual race will be. This will allow you to breeze through the race on the day it happens. You should also make sure that you take a few dry runs of the course you will be running. This way you will be able to find a good pace for the race.
Racing Day
When it is time for the actual race, you should be well prepared and well rested. You should have also gotten a good breakfast at least an hour before the start time. Remember to drink lots of water and to wear your sun screen. Running for charity is a very noble way for you to give back to your community and those in need. Make sure you take the right steps so that you will not be harming yourself in the process and you will be able to enter in many more events in the future.

The very first thing you will be wearing when you start a triathlon should help you instead of hinder you. This is why many athletes wear triathlon wetsuits regardless of what the temperature of the water is. This is because of everything the wetsuit offers. There are a few different factors to keep in mind when buying the wetsuit you will wear in competition. Not least in importance is making sure the suit you purchase will be allowed in the competition you are entering.
Following the Rules
The reason why some events are restrictive when it comes to triathlon wetsuits is because of the unfair advantage it can give some people. Not all wetsuits will do anything more than allow you to keep your skin warm and dry when you are swimming. Make sure you pay close attention to what the rules are. The last thing you want is to be disqualified in the first section of the triathlon. This is completely avoidable as long as you know what the rules are and you make sure you follow them to the letter.
Boosting Speed with a Wetsuit
One of the ways triathlon wetsuits are different from a regular wetsuit is they are designed to reduce friction. These wetsuits are designed to provide less friction than the skin on your body. This will allow all of your energy to be converted directly into forward movement. This is why many athletes will wear a full body wetsuit even while it is summer. The idea is to use every tool in your arsenal to get the best time possible.
How the Wetsuit is Different
Triathlon wetsuits differ from a normal wetsuit in many ways. Not only do they reduce friction, they also increase buoyancy for the swimmer. This will make it easier for your body to stay near the surface of the water. You will not have to struggle to lift your legs out of the water because the suit will help this to happen. The other way the suit is different is because it has more flexibility to be able to complete a powerful stroke. The points which have the most flexibility are under the armpits and in the groin. This will give you maximum athletic movement so can get the best time possible.
Choosing the Right Wetsuit
Since triathlon wetsuits should perform as well as possible, you need to make sure you are comfortable in the suit itself. This means going to a store and trying on every suit they have. Try to go through the range of motions you will use while swimming. The right wetsuit will not pinch of bunch up when you go through a swim stroke. Every motion should be fully supported without creating any drag. If the wetsuit feels too tight or too loose in any way, you should not buy it. If you have tried all the suits the store offers, try a different store until you find the right one.

March 20th, 2012 — Swim Bike Run, Swimming
Swimming is a sport which takes a lot of preparation. You need to have the right training to have good form and a good time. This is true whether you are swimming on your own or in a relay. Your performance in a swim meet can only be affected by the time and effort you put into practice. This means doing more than just swimming laps in the pool. You need to train the muscles you will be using to perform to the best of their ability.
Know Your Pool
The first thing you should know is whether your swimming meet will be in a meter or a yard pool. The standard pool is in a yard pool. The normal length is a 25 yard length for the swim lane. The 25 meter length will be much longer. This means if you are training in a yard pool, the meter pool will seem torturous by comparison. By training in the right kind of pool, you will have an accurate training environment for what you are facing on the day of the meet.
Train Your Arms
A good training exercise to strengthen your arms for a swimming meet is to use paddle boards. These are plastic square boards which strap on to your hands. You use them to isolate the muscles in your arms and strengthen them by creating more pull. When using these, allow your legs to drag behind you without kicking. You will also notice when you are turning your hand. This is important as you will not catch the water correctly if your hand is slashing through the water at an angle. You will learn to keep your hand at the optimal angle to create more push.
Train Your Legs
The kick board is another great piece of training equipment for a swimming meet. This is a Styrofoam board which you rest your torso on. You will then kick your way from one side of the pool to the other. The board will stop you from using your hands as well as creating drag. This will help develop the muscles in your legs. You will find when you strengthen your legs that you will swim faster and stronger while you are in the meet.
Alternate Training Methods
To get the most out of your training for the swimming meet, you need to vary the exercises you are doing every day. This is because you do not want to wear yourself out. It is a good idea to split up between lower and upper body exercise for isolation purposes. You should also make sure you are taking the right amount of breaks. A good rule of thumb would be to swim for five days and take one to two mornings off in between. If you want to swim on the two days between the five, make it a light workout. This will allow your muscles the chance to recuperate and strengthen.

March 19th, 2012 — Swim Bike Run, Swimming, Triathlon Training
Swimming is a sport that can be extremely technical, and as a result, determining how you can concentrate on improving your triathlon swimming capabilities is often difficult. Here are five steps that you should be taking in order to improve your swimming capabilities for an upcoming triathlon. There is no real specific order to these tips, and all five can go a truly long way when it comes to helping you achieve your own personal goals for swimming, regardless of what they are or what your experience level is.
1 – Improve your Master’s swimming in order to improve your triathlon swimming ability. You should move into a slower lane so that you can work on the improvement of your strokes. If you belong to a Master’s team, you should not feel as if you have to keep up with your swimming mates every time you work out because everyone has different swimming goals and you need to work on your own goals rather than everyone else’s.
2 – Improve your swimming habits in order to improve your triathlon swimming ability. One of the most important habits that you can break is to prevent your arms from crossing over. This is one of the most common bad habits that appears in swimmers as their arm crosses over to the other side during the pull. Avoid this by keeping sure that your head is not moving when the rest of your body moves, taking care to pull yourself in a straight line.
3 – Improve your ability to keep the feel in order to improve your triathlon swimming ability. If your toughest sport is swimming, then you need to make sure that you are keeping a feel for the water, getting in the water at least every other day to maintain your awareness of balance within the water.
4 – Improve your lungs and your ability to breathe properly in order to improve your triathlon swimming ability. Make sure that you are mixing in hypoxic training when you are working out. Consider a set of 4x100s breathing with every 3rd, 5th, 7th and 9th stroke by 25, taking a 15 second rest in between each set of 100. Your lungs are going to really thank you when you race and they are properly prepared for the challenges.
5 – Improve your own personal weaknesses in order to improve your triathlon swimming ability. Spend more time working on your own weaknesses than your strengths. If swimming is your weakest sport, spend more time working on it than anything else. This is the best way, above all else, to improve your capabilities in the water.
All five of these tips are simple and straight forward and they really are capable of going a long way when it comes to increasing your capabilities as a swimmer.

March 18th, 2012 — Swim Bike Run, Swimming, Triathlon Tips
Swimming in the triathlon is different from any other kind of swimming. There are tips which will allow you to perform well in this portion of the competition without sapping all of your energy. This is important seeing as you will still have two kinds of competition to engage in after you are done swimming. If you wear yourself out in the swimming portion, you will have nothing left for the rest of the competition. The tips include what you should do in training as well as what you should do in the competition.
Enter the Water Fluidly
One of the first tips for swimming in a triathlon you should know is how to enter the water. Unlike a swimming competition, you will not start with a starting block. This is because you will be starting with at least a hundred other contestants. It is not feasible to start in waves. The majority of competitions will start on the shore of a lake or other body of water. The object is to get as far into the water as possible without slowing yourself down. Once the water is between the knees and the groin, it is a good time to dive in. Practice this on the shore of a body of water to get the timing down right.
Saving Your Energy
It is important when you are done with the swimming portion of the triathlon that you still have enough energy to complete the rest of the triathlon. Among the tips for swimming here will be to find a nice steady pace. This is something you can train yourself to do. Many swimmers have taken to using the long stroke. This is because you will get a lot of power out of every stroke without having to take a lot of strokes to generate the power.
Concentrate on Your Stroke
The more power you get out of every stroke, the less energy you will have to put into swimming. Good tips for swimming will always teach you the best method to produce power in your swim stroke. This includes using an S-Stroke. This stroke finds new water which will propel you faster through the water. You will get more out of every stroke so that you will not use up all of your energy before you ever straddle the bike.
Save Your Legs
Knowing you will have to ride a bike next, good tips for swimming in a triathlon include saving strength in your legs. This means not putting a lot of emphasis on your legs to propel you through the water. When training, it is important to use floaters to develop your upper body strength. This will allow your legs to be as fresh as possible for the rest of the race. After all, the swimming portion is the only part which uses the muscles in the upper body. The rest is all about the lower body. Saving your leg muscles will allow you to at least get across the finish line.
