It is obviously quite important for you to have a really good pair of shoes that you can run in when you are going through the closing stage of a triathlon – But equally important is making sure that you have a solid pair of triathlon shoes that is also going to get you through the bicycle leg of the competition as well, otherwise you may end up doing more harm than good before ever realizing it.

Fundamentally, cycling shoes for a triathlon are like regular cycling shoes however they have been modified in some way. The corresponding rules are going to apply with a single difference, in that it is really truly and seriously fundamental for you to be able to get in and out of your shoes as quickly as humanly possible. This is not a factor for any traditional types of bicycle shoes and so many top cyclists accidentally opt for shoes that are hard for them to remove such as shoes that have hard plastic soles for example.

The most crucial thing that you should be looking for when it comes to choosing any type of cycling shoe, whether you are participating in typical road races or in a triathlon race, is a sole that is solid. This is going to make sure that there is not any dampening, as dampening is capable of leading to an overall loss of power. A sole that is made out of carbon is perfect, but this tends to be a deluxe type of option that not everyone can opt for unfortunately. If your budget is not going to permit that you purchase carbon shoes for your triathlon race, then you are going to want to choose a conventional style plastic sole shoe instead.

You are also going to want to have a shoe that is slightly tight, but not overly tight in the heel and in the toes, as well as a shoe that offers an overall snug feel for your entire foot in general. There shouldn’t ever be any wiggle room to speak of in your shoe because this is going to leave you with a loss of power and a movement of the foot that is less efficient, not to mention the eventuality of a blister, and who wants one of those?

You are probably already going to have spent a lot of money on your triathlon gear including your bike and your helmet and your clothing. If you want your shoes to look just as nice, believe me, we understand. Still, make sure that you are choosing the right shoe more than just the most attractive one for the best possible results on race day or even simply while you are training in preparation for race day.

Triathletes have a bigger challenge than just the cyclist, the swimmer or the runner since they have to compete in all three sports consecutively. Very often, an athlete will excel at one or two parts of the competition but have room for improvement in the third, and this will very often keep an athlete from giving the very best competition during a triathlon. For those who feel that the running part of the triathlon is their weakest leg, here are foot care tips to help you.

Clean your feet of sand after swimming. Even if you feel behind and are struggling, take the few seconds to rinse off your feet before you take off cycling or running. You might shave off a few seconds by not worrying about it, but even the tiniest granule inside your sock can prove to be an annoying and painful distraction as you run. And in the worst case scenario it will start to bother you enough that you’ll have to stop during the race and empty your shoe and sock and wipe off your foot. You could also end up with a blister from the rubbing.

Take care of your feet away from the race, too. It’s not only important to train your feet to pound the pavement, pedal and kick, but you should pamper your feet between training sessions. Clip your toenails carefully so that they’re short but not too short. A nail clipped too short can become sore and make it more difficult for you to race. Rub moisturizing lotion into your feet. Dry skin on your feet might only seem like an annoyance when you’re barefoot, but dry skin can crack and become painful, which can keep you from doing your very best during the triathlon. You put your feet through a lot of punishment during a race, so massage your feet often and take great care of them to avoid these problems.

Keep your shoes dry. When you run or cycle, your feet probably sweat. So your socks will get damp and the insides of your shoes might get a bit moist, too. Choose running shoes designed to wick moisture and let it evaporate quickly, and socks designed to absorb moisture and keep it away from your feet. Good running shoes are key for any type of race, of course, but make sure you put the shoes where they can dry out properly between uses. You won’t only avoid odor but you’ll avoid putting damp shoes on next time you go to run.

Don’t have a pedicure right before a race. You might think a pedicure is the ultimate solution to keep your toenails groomed well and your feet soft. But professional pedicures can make one or more of your toes a little bit sore that day and for a few days, depending on how aggressive your pedicurist might be. A pedicurist might work on your cuticles, pushing them back, and making the skin around the nails a little tender. Treat yourself after the race, instead.

For many people, there is nothing more they need from running than the shear thrill of running. Others run for the exercise but take no special joy in it. Others still seek to run on a more competitive level. No matter what you are looking to get out of running, you are sure to find running groups to suit your needs. There are several groups which are formed in major cities across the country. These groups will be filled with people who have the same interests as you have in running and in life.

Running for Fun

The most prevalent kind of running groups is those which are formed for those who enjoy running. These can be simply about camaraderie or it can be about finding friends and more. You will find inspiration from those you run with. You will also get support when you feel you do not want to run. Your group will keep you on the right track while you help out the others in your group. You will be able to enjoy running no matter what you are doing it for.

Running for Weight Loss

One of the biggest reasons why people take up running is to lose weight. This is a time when running groups will come in extremely handy. It is very easy to stop running on a challenging morning because your heart simply is not in it. Other members of the group will help to make sure you get out and put your feet to the ground. Even if your group only meets a few times a week, it is enough to keep your fitness level up and inspire you to run more days than just when your group meets.

Running for Training

Another of the reasons why it is a good idea to join running groups is if you are training for something like a marathon or a triathlon. You will get the support you need to improve your performance. Some training groups will include people who have run in several marathons before. Others still will have a leader which has experience as a running coach. This will be handy to teach you the tips and skills you will need for good training methods. You can also improve your training by running with others who are also training for the same marathon you are looking to compete in.

Running as a Way of Life

Some people have simply been running for their entire life and they are looking for a way to keep it fun and interesting. They are in no danger of not running every morning because a day without a run is like a day without breathing. The running groups offer a breath of fresh air by providing input from new runners as well as those who have also been running their entire life. You can even help to organize fun running trips in breathtaking locations. This is a great way to make your daily run anything but normal.

Running is something which is usually done for fun and exercise. Even those who run for fun and exercise find themselves wanting to enter in a marathon or triathlon. This is the time when a running calendar can come in handy. This is a calendar in which you record your running and your increases in distance and speed. You will be able to record outside events which might have had an influence on your progress while training. There are many benefits to the calendar as you will see.

Motivational Tool

If you are making sure to keep up with your running calendar every day it will serve as a motivational tool. This is because you will feel inclined to at least look at your calendar every day. This is why you should have a calendar which is in plain sight. Make sure you do not confuse this with a running journal which is also a good idea to keep. You want to make sure the calendar is something which will not be kept in a drawer or desk. Keeping it out in plain sight will make sure you are motivated to make entries after your training.

Tracking Progress

The running calendar serves as a quick and easy tool from which you will be able to see the distance you ran and the length of time it took you to run it. This is especially effective if you run the same route every day. You will be able to see an improvement in the time which you complete the run. You can then track your progress as you switch to more difficult routes. You might want to detail out the route in your running journal and number the route. This way you can easily reference the route on your calendar without taking up valuable space.

Keeping on Track

The running calendar can also serve as a way to keep your training on track. This is important if you are planning to switch routes on a certain date, practicing using drills or taking days off. This will help you to avoid the pause in which you are trying to figure out what you are going to accomplish in the days run. Take the time to sit down and plan out at least a few days in advance. This will help you to prepare for the next day and to steal the energy you will need to accomplish especially difficult training days.

One thing you should include in your training calendar is to include High Intensity Training days. These should be included at least once a week. This is a very effective training method which will help you to build strength and stamina. It is a method which is used by some of the best runners in the world. It is not an easy training method to accomplish because it is deceptively easy to do. What starts as an easy exercise will drain you completely in a third of the time as a long run, but have more long lasting results.

There are some more popular than others. Each offers its own challenges for the participants. No matter what skill level the marathon you are looking to enter, you are sure to want to perform well. This means doing much more than just crossing the finish line. If you would like to place high when running marathons, it will take the right kind of training exercises. It will also take the right kind of precautions to avoid injury. There are a few things you can do to make the difference between ordinary and extraordinary training for a marathon.

Avoid Injury

One of the most common mistakes people make when running marathons is tearing muscles while training. This is possible when you increase the amount of running to the level which is necessary for a marathon. The best training for a marathon means starting at least a year in advance of the marathon. This will allow you to gradually increase the speed and the distance which you are running. You should gradually increase not by the day, but by the week. This is the kind of gradual increase which will help to condition your muscles.

Stretching is one of the most important parts of marathon running which will help you avoid injury. Because you are running much longer than an ordinary run, you will have to do a more intense stretching. This means stretching before you get started. You should then run for about a half mile and stretch again. This will allow your muscles to get a more thorough stretch because they will have heated up from the exercise. The looser your muscles are, the less chance you have of tearing any muscles while you run.

Use High Intensity Training

It will benefit you to take breaks in your long distance running to use High Intensity Training. This is where you run as hard as you can for a short period of time. Take a break half as long as your exercise and then repeat. This should be done for about 15 minutes. The intervals should be one minute of running and 30 seconds of resting. This might sound like training for a sprinter, but it has been proven to be highly effective in creating endurance, strength and stamina which is handy when running marathons. Complete three of these sets in a day and you will increase your breathing capacity and so much more.

Running the Route

Good advice for anyone running marathons like a pro is to run the route you will be racing on for at least a month. If the route is not available to you, it will help you to run a route which has similar changes in elevation and the right length. This is not always easy to find. Some runners turn to stationary tracks to simulate the route. This is only recommended if you integrate it with running on the ground. There is a difference between running on a stationary machine and running on the ground.

Winter running is a challenge because of many different factors. Depending on where you live, you may have to face conditions which will include snow and ice. If nothing else, you will have to face lower than usual temperatures. This is enough to cause some people to put off running again until the summer. This is not necessary as long as you are making the right preparations. It is possible to run in some comfort no matter what the weather throws at you.

The Right Sneakers

The conditions you will face during winter running will mean you will need to wear sneakers which will grip the road even when there is ice and snow. These are like snow tires for your feet. The sneakers you want to wear will have softer rubber. This is because the rubber will harden slightly in the increased cold conditions. The softer rubber will grab onto the snow and ice rather than causing you to slip. This will allow you to run in confidence rather than in fear throughout the winter season.

The Right Under-Gear

Before layering up for winter running, make sure you are wearing clothes which will be comfortable. This means wearing clothes which will provide warmth without adding too much bulk. One of the best types of clothing to wear directly against the skin is made out of bamboo fibers. This is because you will draw moisture away from your body with the wicking ability of the fabric. The natural insulating capability of the material will also allow you to stay warm without huge layers of clothing. You can then layer on leggings, a pull over and a light jacket. You will generate your own heat as you run. You can then start stripping off unnecessary layers.

Protect Your Face

Keep in mind in winter running you may encounter harsh winds which will cause your face to become wind chapped. To avoid this you can wear something as simple as a bandana over your nose and mouth. Because this can restrict breathing, you are better off wearing a face mask which is designed for skiing. This will have openings for your mouth and nose which you can breathe through. You can wear a hat and sunglasses to keep your entire face safe from a painful lashing from the harsh winter winds.

Running on a Treadmill

If all else fails for running outside, you may want to hop on the treadmill. While you are sure to want to run on the ground instead, winter running is simply not always possible. You are much better off running on a treadmill rather than taking the day off. For many people taking one day off will simply lead to giving themselves permission to take more days off until you stop running altogether. Other people are training for a marathon and cannot lose the day of running. The treadmill is a life saver in these occasions. You may also want to find an indoor track you can run.

Every runner has a different way in which they run. Is there any wonder there are so many different kinds of running sneakers on the market? The industry has tried to create a different kind of shoe for every kind of running style. They have also tried to keep in mind the fact every foot is different. This helps and hurts people looking for the right sneaker. The way it hurts you is because there are so many features available, it is difficult to know which ones will help you. What feels good in the store might not translate to a good feeling as you run.

Have Your Foot Analyzed

It is a good idea when looking for good running sneakers to have an expert analyze your foot. They will be able to tell you which parts of your foot will need more support than others. You will know whether you will need an extra amount of arch support or not. This is based upon which parts of your feet you put the most pressure on as well as the unique contours of your individual foot. It has been proven no two feet are exactly alike. There is no reason why you should wear the same shoes as everyone else.

Have Shoes Custom Made

Another good idea when buying the perfect running sneakers is to have a pair custom made. There are many different shops which will have you walk on a special treadmill in order to see how you use your foot. They will even have you run on the treadmill. This will make it possible for them to see exactly which parts of the feet see the most abuse as you run. They can then use this along with a mold of your foot to create a shoe which will provide the perfect support as you run.

Buy the Right Width

Not everyone buying running sneakers can afford to buy custom made shoes. This is why it is important to buy shoes which will be the most comfortable for your feet. This means buying a shoe which is wide enough to allow your foot to spread out as you take a step. A shoe which pinches your foot will cause pain in the arch and on the other side of your foot. A shoe which is too wide will make it where your foot can expand out too far. This will cause your arch to collapse and can even cause blisters.

Buying Shoes Often Enough

One thing which is true about any running sneakers which remains the same is they will wear out. Wearing shoes which have worn out while running will cause your foot a lot of pain. This will also lead to back pain, ankle pain and even muscle tears. Make sure you are changing out your shoes in accordance to the amount of running you are doing. A good measuring stick for the average runner is to buy new shoes at least every six months.

There are more people running than ever before. This is because they want to stay in shape and running seems to be a great way to accomplish this goal. The problem is many people never take the time and learn to run. This can cause you to become injured and get turned off from running. Simply getting to know some basic advice will help you to stay free from injury and will help you to increase your fitness level. Even people who have been running for a long time can benefit from this information.

Watch Your Hands

There is a reason why professional runners keep their hands above the middle of their chest. If you run with your hands too low, it will cause a few different problems. It can cause problems with your equilibrium. The most common problem it can cause is problems in your circulation. This is because the hands swinging so low below your heart will cause blood to flow towards the tips of your fingers and pool there. The force at which you are pumping your arms is more than what your system is used to and can cause you to feel light headed while you are running.

Stretching is Key

One thing you should know while learning to run is the importance of stretching. This is because running can cause a lot of strain on your muscles. The right stretching will prepare your muscles for what is ahead. There are a few stretches which are very effective in keeping you free from injury. These stretches focus on the hamstrings, the quads and the calves. The best advice for stretching is to make sure to warm up the legs first. This can be accomplished by a short brisk walk, short jog or even jumping jacks.

The first stretch you will become familiar with as you learn to run is the toe reach. Bend over from the waste without bending your knees and reach towards your toes. Hold this position for about 15 second without bobbing. You should also stretch your quad by standing on one foot and pulling your other foot towards your back. Hold this for about 15 seconds. Last, you should prop your leg on an elevated plane and reach towards the toe. Reach as far as you can and hold this for 15 seconds. Do these stretches on both legs at least once.

Pay Attention to Your Pace

The worst thing you can do when you learn to run or as you get better is to vary your pace. This is bad because you will throw off your ability to consistently run the same distance. You will notice on some days you will be able to run your route with ease while other days you will be exhausted. This is because you do not have a good pace. You can try creating a cadence in your head by counting rhythmically. Try to avoid wearing headphones until you feel comfortable with the pace you are running at.

Charity is alive and well in the modern culture. This is seen in the donation drives as well as the charitable events which are held every day. For those who are into running, there are many ways you can do your part by running for charity. While some people will compete in the events just to help with a good cause, this is also a great opportunity for you to test your fitness level. This is a great way to turn something you do for fun into something you can do to help out others.

Finding a Charitable Event

There are several running for charity events held every year in cities around the nation. Finding them is quite often as easy as looking in the newspaper. Another very good source for these types of events is through the internet. You can find the events in the running schedule for your city. Another great source to find these kinds of events is through running clubs and stores which support running events often. They will have sections within the store where they list all upcoming events you can sign up for.

Getting Involved

Once you have found an event, the next step in running for charity is signing up. Depending on the event, this can include a registration fee. Others will ask you to find sponsors for your run. Many people like to sign up for runs which ask you to find sponsors. This involves you having people sign up to donate money depending on if you finish, and the place which you finish. The reason why many people prefer this is because it allows them to earn even more money for the charitable event than simply donating a registration fee.

Training for the Race

For some people, running for charity is something they are doing as a part of their training for another event. This can be another running event or it can be a triathlon. For others, the race itself is what they are training for. If this is your case, make sure your everyday runs are longer than what the actual race will be. This will allow you to breeze through the race on the day it happens. You should also make sure that you take a few dry runs of the course you will be running. This way you will be able to find a good pace for the race.

Racing Day

When it is time for the actual race, you should be well prepared and well rested. You should have also gotten a good breakfast at least an hour before the start time. Remember to drink lots of water and to wear your sun screen. Running for charity is a very noble way for you to give back to your community and those in need. Make sure you take the right steps so that you will not be harming yourself in the process and you will be able to enter in many more events in the future.
